A comfortable indoor microclimate is impossible without a regular supply of fresh air. But what do you do if you don't want to open the window fully because of draughts, noise or children's safety? An excellent solution is slot ventilation (micro-ventilation). This is a special hardware mode in which the sash opens just a few millimetres, providing a constant but imperceptible flow of air.

What is slot ventilation (micro-ventilation)?

Slot ventilation is a mode of a tilt-and-turn window in which the sash is fixed in a slightly open position a few millimetres from the frame. This provides a constant flow of fresh air without a sharp draught and without a big drop in room temperature, even in a strong wind.

Why it's important that slot ventilation is safe

Many people wrongly think it's enough simply to turn the handle to an intermediate position and the window will be in ventilation mode. This is dangerous! Without special catches the sash can:

fly open sharply in a gust of wind, hit the slope or wall and damage the glass unit, frame or hardware;
close on its own, creating a draught or trapping fingers;
fail to provide enough ventilation, because the gap will be unstable.

That's why safe, comfortable micro-ventilation needs special hardware: a strike plate on the frame and a locking cam on the sash that fix the sash in the required position.

How to tell whether your window has slot ventilation

It's very easy to check. Open the sash and look at the top part of the frame. If all the strike plates (the metal catches) are identical, there's most likely no micro-ventilation. If one of the plates (usually nearer the top corner) differs in shape, the function is present. On different brands (Roto, Siegenia, Maco) the design may differ slightly, but the principle is the same.

A modern solution: the ROTO NT system and its advantages

How I install slot ventilation in Minsk

The installation process isn't complicated, but it requires precision and a knowledge of the features of your window system. Here's how I do it:

Diagnosis. I come to you, inspect the window and determine the type of profile and hardware.
Fitting the plate. I replace the standard top strike plate with a ventilation one, set precisely to the level so the cam enters it freely.
Checking. I turn the handle to the ventilation position (between "open" and "tilt") and make sure the sash is held securely and returns easily to the closed position.

All the work takes about 10–20 minutes per sash. I do everything neatly, without dust or mess.

Important points to know

Compatibility. Slot ventilation can't be fitted to every window. If the hardware is very old or non-standard, it may need replacing or a different ventilation method. I always check this during the diagnosis.
The window's condition. If the sash sags or the seals are worn, the window must first be adjusted and the seals replaced, otherwise the slot ventilation won't work correctly.
Installation precision. The plate must sit exactly opposite the cam. Even a millimetre's offset can mean the sash won't fix or, conversely, sticks.

How much does fitting slot ventilation cost? The cost depends on the type of hardware and the complexity. On average, fitting a plate on one sash is inexpensive. I name the exact price after a free inspection.

Can slot ventilation be fitted to any plastic window? To most modern windows with tilt-and-turn hardware, yes. If your window is old or has non-standard hardware, I'll suggest alternatives (for example, fitting a comb or a supply valve).

Is slot ventilation different from an ordinary comb? Yes, they're different things. A comb is simply a restrictor that stops the sash opening wider, but it doesn't fix it securely and can be easily removed. Slot ventilation is a built-in hardware function that provides reliable fixing and a neater look.
