Replacing the window with a height of 2340 mm: a difficult case with a successful solution.
A client came to me with a non-standard task. His home had a window with unusual parameters: the sash height was 2340 mm, well above the standard size. On top of that, the window used a mullion-free (stulp) system — where one sash is dependent on the other and has no handle of its own. The hardware fitted to the window was from a long-lived early Roto series and, after many years of faithful service, the gearbox had broken. A full hardware replacement was needed. Here's how I tackled this tricky task.
What made it difficult
- The non-standard sash height (2340 mm). These are heavy, tall structures that require a special choice of hardware — standard sets often aren't rated for such loads.
- The mullion-free (stulp) system. Windows like this require precise tuning, since the sashes are interconnected and one is dependent on the other.
What was done
- Removal. I carefully took off the sashes and the old mechanisms, trying not to damage the profile or the glass units. In structures like these, every little detail matters.
- Selecting the new hardware. Given the height and the mullion-free system, I chose modern reinforced hardware designed for heavy sashes. It was important that it suited the existing profile and provided reliable fixing.
- Installation and adjustment. The new hardware was fitted with jeweller's precision. I paid special attention to the adjustment, so that the sashes open and close smoothly, without skews, and the pressure is even around the whole perimeter.
The result
The work took about 3 hours. The window works perfectly again: the sashes move easily, the handle turns without effort, and the tightness is restored. The client was pleased, and I was reminded once again that even the most complex and non-standard tasks can be solved with experience, the right tools and quality materials.
