Furniture of the plastic window is broken, the sealant is dried: how we saved the window (Minsk)
Someone came to me with a window that, to put it mildly, had seen better days. The hardware was completely broken, the handle wobbled, and the sash wouldn't fix in any position. The seal had turned into a hard, dried-out strip that had lost all its elasticity. Outwardly the window looked as if it had survived a bombing. Fortunately, though, the main elements — the frame and the sash itself — remained intact. That gave a chance of restoration without a full replacement of the structure.
What was done
I offered the owner the best solution: not to replace the whole window, but to carry out a major repair with replacement of the key elements. Here's what the work included:
- Full hardware replacement. The old, worn and broken mechanism was removed. A new hardware set from a trusted maker was fitted, providing smooth opening, reliable fixing in all modes and a long service life.
- Seal replacement. The dried-out, cracked seal was replaced with a new, quality (German) one, restoring the tightness and getting rid of draughts.
The result: a window that had looked hopelessly ruined was once again doing its job 100%. The frame and sash stayed original, which preserved the appearance and saved a significant sum compared with buying a new window. The client got a fully working, airtight and good-looking structure.
Why this is worthwhile
- Economy. Replacing the hardware and the seal costs many times less than buying and installing a new window.
- Speed. The repair takes just a few hours, whereas replacing a window can drag on for days.
- Preserving the finish. There's no need to touch the slopes, sill or wallpaper — everything stays in place.
- A functional upgrade. New hardware can have useful extra options (micro-ventilation, anti-burglary) that the old set didn't have.
