Blowing up the entrance door in Minsk: diagnosis and elimination
Someone came to me with a problem: the front door (probably PVC or metal-plastic) was draughting at the top, in the corner on the handle side. The owners had already tried adjusting it, but the effect was only temporary. Here's how the diagnosis went and what became the final solution.
Diagnosis: a combination of causes
On inspection it turned out the problem wasn't in any single part but in a combination of several factors:
- A slight frame skew. The horizontal part of the frame deviated from level, and in an unfavourable direction — the hinge side was lower. If it had been higher, that could have been compensated for, but here the skew only made the sagging worse.
- Weak sash reinforcement. The metal reinforcer inside the sash was too thin — frankly weak for a door of this size. The rigidity of the structure left a lot to be desired.
- An unfortunate design. Visually the door looked attractive, but in terms of geometry and weight distribution it was poor: the light sandwich panel didn't give the sash enough rigidity, so it played.
The solution: replacing the light fill with glass units
I suggested replacing the sandwich panel with glass units — a heavier, rigid element that, when correctly installed, sets the right geometry for the sash and prevents deformation. Thanks to the weight and rigidity of the glass unit, the door stops playing and sagging.
The process included:
- Removing the old sandwich panel.
- Making and fitting glass units of a suitable size.
- Correctly setting the support plates so the glass unit sat true and set the required shape.
- A final adjustment of the door in all planes.
The result
After the fill was replaced, the door stopped draughting. The geometry stabilised, and the pressure at the top became tight and even. How long this solution will last, time will tell, but given the rigidity of the glass unit, a long service life can be expected. In any case, it's far better than endless adjustments.
Conclusions
If your front door draughts and an adjustment helps only for a short time, the problem may lie in insufficient sash rigidity. In such cases, replacing the light fill (a sandwich panel) with glass units is an effective — though more expensive — solution that fixes the cause rather than the symptom.
