Case from practice: when the window opens at once in two modes (Minsk)

Someone came to me with an unusual but, as it turned out, fairly common problem. When the handle was turned to the "ventilation" position, the sash not only tilted but at the same time began to swing wide open. In other words, the window lived a life of its own, and the owners couldn't influence it at all. On top of that, because of the huge gaps, in winter you could find snow on the windowsill. Let me tell you in detail what the cause was and how it was put right.

Diagnosis: what had really happened to the window

At the first inspection the picture was a sad one:

• A severe sash misalignment. It was so skewed that the matching parts on the sash and frame simply couldn't engage. Through the gap that had formed you could see the street — no wonder snow blew in during winter.
• Stripped flats on the adjustment bolt. A clear sign that someone had tried to repair the window before, but did it unprofessionally — over-tightened it or used the wrong tool.
• A jammed scissor mechanism. Because of the misalignment, when the handle was turned to "ventilation" the mechanism didn't engage and the window simply swung open.

What was done

I completely rebuilt the sash, restoring its geometry. This is a painstaking process that requires precision and experience:

• Set the correct sash position in all planes.
• Replaced both seals (on the sash and on the frame) with quality ones, suited specifically to this profile.
• Carried out full servicing of the hardware: cleaning, lubrication, checking all the units.
• Tuned the operation of the mechanism so that the ventilation worked as it should and the window didn't open by itself.

After the repair the window closed tightly, with no gaps, and the ventilation mode worked perfectly. The client was pleased — especially when he learned that there would be no more snowdrifts on the windowsill in winter.

Conclusions and recommendations

This story is a clear example of how an unqualified repair (or the lack of one) can lead to serious problems. If a window has started "playing up" — opening in the wrong mode, letting in cold — don't try to solve the problem with makeshift means. Call a master: a timely repair is far cheaper than fixing the consequences.
