Have you noticed that the handle has started turning with effort, the window closes with difficulty, and there's a squeak when it opens? That means the hardware of your plastic window urgently needs lubrication. Many people underestimate this simple procedure — wrongly: timely lubrication extends the life of the mechanisms by 2–3 times and prevents an expensive repair. Why window hardware needs lubricating

- It saves your money — prevention is cheaper than repairing or replacing the hardware.
The hardware makers (Roto, Siegenia, Maco, Fornax and others) recommend lubricating at least once a year.
What to lubricate plastic windows with
Use silicone lubricant or a special oil for window hardware (Roto and Siegenia ones are available in specialist shops). Important: the lubricant must be colourless and neutral to plastic.
What you must not lubricate plastic windows with (serious mistakes)
- WD-40 isn't a lubricant but a water-repellent fluid. It washes out the factory grease and, within a month, leaves the mechanism dry, speeding up wear.
- Lithol, solidol, thick machine oil attract dust and dirt, turning into an abrasive that wears down the parts.
- Vaseline, glycerine, vegetable oil dry out, thicken and leave a sticky film.
- Don't use aerosols without a tube — they spray off-target and dirty the profile.
Incorrect lubrication often means the hardware has to be replaced within six months. I regularly see such cases: a client sprayed WD-40, then the handle jammed and the gearbox had to be replaced.

- Inspection and diagnosis. I check all the moving units: hinges, cams, gearbox, scissor mechanism, corner switches.
- Cleaning off dust and old grease.
- Applying lubricant to all the moving elements.
- Checking — the handle turns easily.

How often should windows be lubricated? Once a year, ideally in spring or autumn. If the windows face a busy road or a construction zone — every six months.
Can I lubricate the windows myself? Yes, if you have experience. But most people make mistakes (using WD-40 or lithol). If you're not sure, it's better to call a master. My lubrication, with a warranty, costs not much more than buying an unsuitable product.
What happens if you don't lubricate the hardware at all? Over time the mechanism wears, the handle turns stiffly, squeaks appear, and then the gearbox or scissor mechanism breaks. The repair will cost several times more than prevention.
