Why plastic windows need care after winter

Winter is a tough test for PVC windows. Temperature swings, moisture, ice and constant use wear the mechanisms. In spring, servicing your plastic windows becomes not a recommendation but a necessity. I'm Dmitry, a plastic window repair master with more than 20 years' experience. I work in Minsk and the Minsk district. Every spring people come to me with the same problems: squeaking, a stiff handle, draughts, a skewed sash. 👉 In 90% of cases these problems can be avoided by servicing the windows after winter in good time.

What happens to windows over winter

During the cold period, dust and moisture build up inside the mechanisms. The lubricant loses its properties, and the seals dry out. As a result:

the sash starts to catch the frame;
a squeak or crunch appears;
the handle turns with effort;
a draught appears even when the window is closed.

This is especially common in new builds, where PVC window servicing isn't carried out at all.

What spring servicing includes

Cleaning the hardware — the hinges, cams, gearbox and scissor mechanism.
Lubricating the mechanisms. I use professional silicone lubricant. This ensures smooth operation and extends the service life.
Adjusting the windows. I set the sash pressure, remove skews and prepare the window for summer mode.
Checking the seal. I assess the condition of the rubber and, if needed, recommend a seal replacement.
Cleaning the drainage. I clear the drainage holes of dirt to avoid moisture build-up.
Checking the sash geometry. If needed, I carry out a sash adjustment.

Signs that windows urgently need servicing

the window closes stiffly;
a squeak on opening;
a draught has appeared;
the sash catches the frame;
dust builds up on the windowsill.

Can you service windows yourself?

Partly, yes: wipe the dust off the sash, and treat the seal with silicone lubricant. But full technical servicing of plastic windows requires experience and tools.
