Replacing the PVC Window Drive (Gear) in Minsk — Repair and Compatibility
If the handle of your plastic window has started spinning, turns with a crunch or doesn't respond at all, the drive (gearbox) has most likely broken. This is the central mechanism that transfers the force from the handle to all the locking cams. Without it the sash won't open or close. There's no need to replace the window because of this — it's enough to replace the drive. I'm Dmitry, a window repair master working since 2003 in Minsk and the Minsk district. In this article I'll explain how to select a drive, which versions are interchangeable, and whether it's worth buying cheap gearboxes from marketplaces.
What the drive (gearbox) is and how to tell it has broken
The drive is a metal mechanism located inside the sash, on the edge. It connects to the handle and pulls all the other hardware elements along with it.
Signs of a broken drive:
- the handle spins freely or in jerks, but the sash won't close;
- a metallic crunch or clicking is heard;
- the handle jams halfway and won't turn fully.
Interchangeability of drives — don't chase the brand
Many people think the drive must be exactly the same brand as all the hardware (Roto, Siegenia, Maco, Fornax and so on). In fact that's not always the case. In 80–90% of cases the drives of different brands are interchangeable, provided the following match:
- the length of the drive;
- the type of gear transmission (usually standard);
- the shape of the connection to the handle (a 4 mm square pin is universal).
I often fit a Fornax drive on windows with Roto hardware — they work perfectly. The only difference is the marking. So if the original drive is discontinued or out of stock, an analogue can always be selected. This is especially relevant in the current climate, when supplies of European hardware are restricted. The takeaway: don't chase the brand. The main thing is to correctly select the size and type.
Repair gearboxes from Ozon, Wildberries and other marketplaces — worth buying?
Marketplaces now sell a lot of repair gearboxes cheaply. Outwardly they copy the originals, but inside is a cheap alloy and often low-quality gears. They have no certification, their origin is unclear — components of unconfirmed origin are a pig in a poke. By contrast, I buy drives from trusted suppliers (originals or quality analogues). I give a warranty of up to a year on them. If one fails within that period, I'll replace it free of charge. That's an honest approach.
The cost of a drive replacement in Minsk
- Drive (gearbox) replacement: 150 BYN (including the work and a new drive).
- A client-supplied repair gearbox: work 50 BYN (no warranty).
- Full hardware replacement (if something else has broken too): from 270 BYN.
I name the exact cost after an inspection — I come, diagnose and tell you the price.
Frequently asked questions
Can the drive be replaced without removing the sash? Yes, if there's free access to the fixings. For a quality replacement and adjustment, the sash isn't removed. But if for some reason removal is necessary, I do it carefully, without any damage.
Do I have to replace the whole drive if only a gear has broken? Separate gears aren't sold — the drive is replaced as a single assembly. This is more reliable: a new drive will serve for years, whereas repairing one gear is a temporary measure.
