The physics of the phenomenon: where does the sound come from?

Picture the narrow gap between the sash and the frame when the handle is in the ventilation (tilt) position. A powerful stream of cold outside air, created by the natural draught in the ventilation (especially strong in high-rise buildings in winter), passes through this gap at high speed. When this stream meets a sharp or insufficiently elastic edge of the seal, sound vibrations arise — that very piercing whistle.

The main cause: a cheap seal

Here lies the key misconception. Most modern windows, especially budget ones, are fitted not with a classic rubber seal (EPDM) but with its cheap analogue — a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE, SEBS).

Its drawbacks:

Low frost resistance: in the cold this material hardens, loses its elasticity, and its edge becomes sharp as a blade.
"Ideal acoustics": the hard, even edge of a TPE seal slices the airflow perfectly, creating the sound. The stronger the wind, the louder the "song".
Manufacturer's saving: such seals are often used in co-extrusion technology — they're welded straight into the profile during its manufacture. This makes the process cheaper for the factory, but creates a problem for you.

How to tell a quality seal: EPDM is soft and matte, and stays flexible even in frost. Thermoplastics can be glossier and, in the cold, feel like hard plastic. If you suspect this is the issue, it's best to call a master for a diagnosis.

Working ways to get rid of the whistle

Method 1. Replacing the seal with quality EPDM (the proper solution)

The rounded edge of a new EPDM seal doesn't cause turbulent vibrations of the air. The window works quietly and tightly again. ⚠️ This is a job for an experienced master, as it requires care and an understanding of the window's construction. Method 2. A temporary measure: adjusting the sash pressure

Sometimes increasing the pressure around the whole perimeter of the sash (using the eccentrics on the edge) can change the geometry of the gap during micro-ventilation and remove the whistle. But this method doesn't guarantee a result and may only shift the problem or make the pressure too tight. It's better to use it as a temporary solution until the seal is replaced.

Method 3. Checking an alternative cause: the installation seams

If the window whistles when the sash is fully closed, the problem is almost certainly not the seal. The source of the sound is the installation seams between the frame and the wall. Over time the sealant (foam, silicone) can come away or crack, creating micro-gaps that "sing" in the wind. A diagnosis and re-sealing of the seam are required.
