Why Plastic Windows Whistle and How to Stop the Noise in Minsk
Have you ever heard your window start to howl or whistle in a strong wind? It's especially annoying at night and in the cold season. The problem often appears not straight away but 1–2 years after installation. When you open the sash the sound disappears, and many people think the seal is to blame. But replacing the rubber doesn't help, and masters who come on a call-out sometimes can't reproduce the noise — it only appears in certain weather. Sound familiar? I'm Dmitry, a window repair master in Minsk (Spravnae Akenca), and I'll explain why windows "sing" and how to get rid of the annoying whistle for good.
The real cause of the whistle isn't the seal
In the vast majority of cases the culprit isn't the seal but installation errors. All "singing" windows share one common detail — plastic slopes. The joints between the frame and the slope are filled with sealant — and not just any sealant, but silicone. After curing, silicone turns into an elastic film that vibrates in the airflow. The sealant has peeled or cracked in places. When you press on the slope in the dusty zone, the whistle changes or disappears. This is the typical picture of a singing window: the gaps, visible by the dust streaks, are where the air gets through.
How to remove the window whistle: a step-by-step guide
Step 1. Find the source of the sound. In a strong wind, press your hands on the slopes, especially where dust streaks are visible. As soon as the sound stops or changes — you're on the right track.
Step 2. Remove the old sealant. At the spot you've found, carefully remove the strips of silicone. Often this alone is enough for the sound to disappear. If you're satisfied with the result, you can leave it as is — but it's a half-measure.
Step 3. Replace the sealant with the right one. Instead of silicone, use acrylic or synthetic sealant (Quilosa, for example). They're harder and don't vibrate. However, the cavities under the slopes will remain, and the window will stay cold.
Step 4. Full elimination of the cause. The most reliable way is to remove the slopes, the sill and the external drip cap, then properly re-foam the installation seam around the whole perimeter with quality foam, and only after that restore the slopes. This removes the whistle and the draught, and makes the window warm again.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the whistle appear only a couple of years after installation? At first the sealant holds well, but over time, because of temperature deformation and wind, it peels and exposes the gaps. The foam can also shrink.
Can the whistle come from the seal? Extremely rarely. The seal usually gives an even draught, not a whistle. A whistle is always the resonance of a thin strip of material.
Do you take on this kind of work? Yes, I carry out a diagnosis and a full fix of draughting and whistling. If needed, I redo the installation seams, change the sealant and restore the slopes.
