Repair of the G-U (Gretsch-Unitas) hardware: a complex hardware for portals and doors my experience in Minsk

When I arrive on a call to repair windows or doors in Minsk and the Minsk district and see the G-U logo on the hardware, I immediately know there's about to be a job that calls for a special approach. G-U is not just window hardware — it's a systems manufacturer specialising in doors, portals and sliding structures. And that strongly affects how these mechanisms behave.

In my practice I've come across G-U on the most varied jobs: from ordinary PVC windows in new builds to huge panoramic portals in country houses. And I can say with confidence: where high load capacity and reliability for heavy sashes are needed, G-U is in its element. In the mass segment of ordinary windows, though, it loses out to Roto, Maco or Siegenia. Why? Let's break it down.

The main G-U lines I encounter

G-U is a systems brand with several series, each with its own quirks:

  • EURO-JET — the older kinematics; most of its problems are age-related.
  • UNI-JET — the mainstream series, used across PVC, aluminium and timber.
  • ECO-JET — the budget version, fitted to cheaper windows.
  • ALU-JET — for aluminium profiles.

It's important to understand that G-U is not a pure "window" maker. Its strength is doors, portals and sliding systems (Parallelogramm, folding structures). In ordinary windows it's less common, but in balcony doors, double-vent (mullion-free) structures and especially portals it turns up all the time.

Where G-U works well, and where it doesn't

Strengths:

  • High load capacity — a sash up to 130 kg as standard.
  • Excellent anti-corrosion coating (electroplating + bichromate, and on some series faceGUard, rated up to 1500 hours of salt-spray testing).
  • Flexibility — suits PVC, aluminium and timber.
  • Modularity — security elements can be added later.
  • Good pressure geometry — the engineers paid attention to the rebate.

Weak points (what I watch for during diagnostics):

  • Overall softness of the mechanism — over time play appears faster than on Roto.
  • The micro-lift and the blocker aren't the most reliable units; they often can't cope with heavy sashes and misalignment.
  • In my practice, sagging on G-U happens earlier than on others if the installation was only average — it doesn't forgive errors in geometry and reinforcement.

Typical faults I come across

  • Failure of the mis-opening blocker.
  • Failure of the micro-lift.
  • Sash sagging even at a normal weight.
  • The lower hinge working loose.
  • Worn cams.
  • A jam in the turn/tilt position — seen especially often on the ECO-JET (budget) series, where the mechanics are simplified, play appears faster and the hinges are weaker.

Problems by series and period (personal observations)

  • EURO-JET (up to about 2010) — outdated kinematics, weak pressure, fast wear. Such windows are almost gone now, but if you meet one, be ready for a replacement.
  • UNI-JET (2005–present) — early versions (2005–2012): a weak blocker, fast wear of the strike plates. Versions 2012–2018: the coating was improved, but the micro-lift remains the problem area. After 2018 it's more stable, but still not the leader on lifespan.
  • ECO-JET (from 2013) — the budget version fitted to cheap windows. Simplified mechanics.

Repair vs replacement

  • Replacing individual units (blocker, micro-lift, cams, strike plates): from 30 BYN per element.
  • Repairing complex Patio systems (sliding portals): from 80 BYN — this needs experience with heavy structures.
  • Full replacement of G-U hardware: from 120 BYN, if the system is worn out or spare parts are no longer available.

Prices are approximate; the exact figure I give after inspection.

A practical tip from a master

Never try to lubricate G-U mechanisms with thick greases like lithol! They collect dust and turn into an abrasive that eats away the carriage tracks. Use only specialised liquid sprays (silicone lubricant for window hardware). And one more thing: don't over-tighten the cams to the maximum, especially on the budget series — the soft metal can deform.

Frequently asked questions

Can G-U hardware be swapped for another brand? Technically yes, but it requires matching a set to the profile. I carry out such a replacement when it's justified.

Why does G-U start to develop play quickly? Because of the overall softness of the mechanism and its sensitivity to installation quality.

Will G-U last if the installation was perfect? Yes — with correct geometry, reinforcement and regular care, G-U serves reliably for years, especially on doors and portals.

Conclusion

G-U is complex, systems-grade hardware that demands respect. It's good where high load capacity and reliability for doors and portals are needed. In ordinary windows it yields to the market leaders. But if your balcony block or panoramic window already runs on G-U and you've noticed faults, don't put it off. Timely adjustment and proper care will extend the life of your structures.
