Winter and Summer Window Mode in Minsk: Myths and Reality

Many owners of plastic windows have heard about the need to switch their windows to winter or summer mode. The internet is full of instructions on how to turn the eccentrics and increase the sash pressure. But is it really necessary to do this every season? And what actually happens to a window if you mindlessly turn the cams? I'm Dmitry, a window repair master with 20 years' experience, and every day I deal with the consequences of incorrect adjustment. In this article I'll explain what winter mode really is, when it's needed and when it does only harm, and how to set up windows correctly in Minsk and the Minsk district.

What winter and summer mode really are

Strictly speaking, there are no special seasonal modes built into a window's design. Hardware makers provide the ability to adjust the force with which the sash presses against the frame using the eccentrics (cams). This is needed to compensate for seal wear or small deformations. A quality window, installed correctly, serves for 10 years or more with regular care — without seasonal fiddling.

Where the myth of seasonal adjustment came from

It all started with low-quality windows and installation errors. If a window is assembled with a geometry fault (the sash is skewed, the reinforcement is weak), or the frame was "stretched" during installation, then in winter, due to temperature deformations, a gap can appear. The owner notices a draught and starts looking for a solution. Someone advises turning the cams to maximum — and indeed, the draught temporarily disappears. That's how the myth was born: "you have to increase the pressure for winter." But in reality the problem wasn't the absence of a "winter mode" — it was a defect in the window or the installation. And instead of dealing with the cause, people simply tighten the window, shortening the life of the seal and the hardware.

When pressure adjustment is really needed

There are only two cases when it's worth turning the cams:

  • Seal wear. Over time the rubber loses its elasticity and compresses, and even in the neutral position a gap can appear. Increasing the pressure lets you postpone replacing the seal for a while.
  • A local draught with an intact seal. If the seal is sound but air still gets through in one spot, you can try slightly increasing the pressure on the relevant cams. But it's better to call a master for a precise diagnosis.

In all other cases (a new window that's correctly installed), there's no need to touch the cams.

What happens if you over-tighten the pressure

  • premature seal wear (it simply flattens and stops doing its job);
  • increased load on the hardware (the handle turns stiffly, the mechanisms wear faster);
  • possible stripping of the screws in the plastic (especially on cheap profiles).

How to set up a window correctly

The ideal option is to set the correct sash geometry once and forget about seasonal adjustments. If the window stands true and the seal is of good quality, the pressure in the neutral position will provide a tight seal both in winter and in summer.

If you've noticed a draught, don't rush to turn the cams. First check:

  • whether there's a sash misalignment (does it rub the frame, are the gaps even);
  • whether the seal is intact and hasn't slipped out of its groove;
  • whether the draught comes from the installation seam (this is cured not by adjustment but by sealing).

If the problem really is weak pressure, act carefully. On the edge of the sash there are cams (eccentrics). Usually they have a mark or an oval shape. By turning them (with a hex key or pliers) you change the pressure force. Important: don't over-tighten if the seals are of good quality and correctly installed — in the neutral position they already provide enough pressure, and over-tightening will only do harm.

Frequently asked questions

Why has the handle become stiffer in winter? This can be due to over-tightened cams (if you've been turning them) or the thermal contraction of the materials. Try easing off the pressure a little or check the lubrication of the mechanisms.

My window draughts even at maximum pressure. What do I do? Then the problem isn't the pressure. Possible causes: a worn or unsuitable seal, a sash misalignment, an installation defect. A diagnosis is needed.

How much does a master's call-out for setting up windows cost? The call-out and diagnosis are free. You pay only for the work. If a simple adjustment is needed, the price will be nominal. I name the exact cost after an inspection.
