Is It Worth Overpaying for a Brand When Replacing Window Hardware in Minsk?

When a client's hardware on a plastic window breaks, the first question I hear is: "What's better to fit — Roto, Siegenia, Maco? Expensive, but reliable?"

Where the "only European quality" myth came from

10–15 years ago the situation was different. European hardware (Roto, Siegenia, Maco, Winkhaus) really did set the standard of quality. Turkish and Chinese analogues lagged behind on lifespan, precision and reliability. But the market has changed. Today Turkish hardware (Fornax, for example, as a representative of the segment) consists of full-fledged systems that are built to last and offer the functions buyers need.

👉 The difference is 2–3 times. And in most cases it gives no noticeable advantage in use.

What's happening with European hardware today

To be honest, the hardware market in Minsk has changed a lot in recent years:

• supplies have shrunk or become unstable;
• there's a lot of grey-market goods;
• originality isn't always confirmed;
• prices have risen, while guarantees have shrunk.

Real observations from practice

• Winkhaus — the new lines with polyamide gearboxes have performed weakly. There are questions about their lifespan.
• Roto — problems with the scissor mechanisms and gearboxes come up regularly.
• Siegenia — good hardware, but the price is often unjustifiably high.
• Maco — decent overall, but there are doubts about supply: it's not always clear whether it's an original.

👉 You pay more, but you don't always get the quality you're paying for.

A comparison of typical hardware faults

What I see in real window-repair practice in Minsk

I service windows with all sorts of hardware — from expensive European to budget solutions. And I can say honestly:

• expensive hardware breaks too;
• lifespan depends not only on the brand, but on the operating conditions;
• Turkish systems work for years without serious problems;
• repairing Turkish hardware is cheaper and faster.

👉 I had a case: a client fitted expensive hardware, and a year later play appeared. Meanwhile the neighbouring sash on Fornax worked without a single complaint.

When it makes sense to pay extra

I'm not against expensive brands. They're justified if:

• you have large or heavy sashes;
• there are increased security requirements;
• a specific brand matters to you;
• you're ready to wait for original components.

👉 In all other cases it's an overpayment with no real benefit.

What really matters when replacing hardware

• compatibility with your PVC window;
• correct installation and adjustment;
• choosing a suitable system;
• setting up the window's operation properly.

Conclusion

My clients' most common choice today is Turkish hardware (Fornax, for example). And in recent years I haven't had a single case where I regretted that recommendation.
